Selection process and exam pattern

First stage: online written test

Section Marks
General Knowledge and Reasoning 40
Intellectual ability and Mental aptitude 30
Science and Simple Arithmetic 30
Total (100 questions, 2 hours, in Hindi) 100

Each correct answer earns 1 mark and there is no negative marking. The exam runs in two shifts: reporting 8:00 to 9:00 AM for the 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon paper, and 1:00 to 2:00 PM for the 3:00 to 5:00 PM paper. Seven times the advertised posts in each vertical category are called for the second stage on the cut-off percentile, and everyone at that cut-off is called.

Second stage: documents and practical test

Documents are checked at Bhopal by a committee formed by the Director General of Police, followed by a one-hour practical test of 100 marks. You need 30% to pass it.

  • Subedar Steno: two Hindi shorthand dictations at 100 words per minute for 05 minutes each, 05 minutes to read the draft, and 20 minutes to type each transcript. Each dictation carries 10 marks and each typed transcript 40 marks.
  • ASI (Ministerial): two Hindi paragraphs of 600 words each, each typed in 30 minutes, 50 marks per paragraph.

The final merit list is built on the total of written and practical marks. Equal scores are broken by age, with the older candidate placed higher. Certain priority groups, such as ex-servicemen, NCC "C" certificate holders and surplus government employees, get 5% extra marks in the written exam.
